Catfish Farming in Africa: Costs, Profits and How to Start

Catfish farming is popular because the fish grows fast, tolerates high stocking density and sells easily in open markets, restaurants and pepper-soup joints.
Choosing your pond type
- Concrete ponds: durable, higher upfront cost
- Tarpaulin ponds: cheap and portable, ideal for beginners
- Earthen ponds: cheapest per square metre, need suitable land
Feed is your biggest cost
Feed can be 70% of your running cost. Mixing local feed with imported pellets as the fish grow can cut costs significantly without hurting growth.
